another contest, another quilt

FLOWERS FOR MAKENNA

Quilting bloggers is having another weekly theme contest "FLOWERS" and this is the quilt I entered.  I made it in anticipation of my first grandchild.  Sure glad she was a girl...............lol!! I finished hemming it while daughter was in labor.  (in all honesty I was also working on one for a boy with appliqued airplanes out of most of the same fabrics as this one ( less the pink and purple.)  Caught a lucky breaking getting a granddaughter first( you know it didn't even dawn on me till she was about 8 months along that it could be a boy somehow I just knew but why tempt fate,,,,,,,,that's when I started the airplanes.  :))  It would not have been ready in time for hospital pictures.  and to this day is stilll an incomplete UFO even though I have a grandson, he has his own quilt (see Pennies for Rylee) ( or at least he used to have it until his mothers ex threw it away. ggrrrrrr!!!)  Below is a picture of Makenna this evening holding her baby quilt so you can see the label, the ink (micro pens) has faded to the point you can barely read it. Today age 9, she began her first day of fourth grade.

called "Pennies for Rylee" You can't see much of it but it is hanging on the coolest antique wicker(?) stroller that is here in a local antique shoppe.  It is soo cool, but I was tryong to feature my quilt not the stroller.

This is my granddaughter, Camryn (age 3 almost 4)  Makenna's little sister asleep on the recliner cuddling her pile of adopted fabric scraps that she folds and refolds carefully.  I won them from Cyndi  bluebirdswing and she claimed about half them.  This has been going on ever since we opened the box of goodies.  Aren't kids fuuny, maybe she has the fabric bug since none of my girls did!!!

Dawn Hay Frosty Flake #3

..............is done!! She was naughty and posted it late last night her time,  moring here I had to think about it all day t work, knowing I wouldn't be able to do it till late this evening.  Got home and still had to pick roma tomatoes, about 3/4 bushel.  I slipped the skins and froze them tonight in 8 cup batches.  I had excellent help... 3 yr old GD#2 peeled the cooled tomatoes.  She did a gallon all by herself.  So, about 8:00 I finally sat down, grabbed my file folder templates and fussy cut the red fabric I had pulled out of a red pile............check out the fabric.  I fussy cut the first too but wasn't as precise as I was tonight  The pattern on the fabric was more intricate tonight ..........can't wait to do another set out of this fabric becaise there's about 2 different elements to fussy cut around and by tuning could produce many different patterns.

100th post giveaway

Wait don' t file a missing persons report...................
Betty already did that when I missed a chicks meeting the other night, but things came up and the tomatoes called and they wouldn't wait, up till midnight canning tomatoes and salsa.
I am not missing, just incredibly busy, no "extra" time, no blog time, feel like I have been running a marathon here and there, doing this and that for the last 2 weeks..........for those who know me well, you will be shocked I fell asleep by 10:30, 2 different nights this weekend...........my body said "enough is enough" and with stitching in my lap, fell asleep...........missed most  all of the postings this weekend but did not stab myself with the needle or poke myself with the scissors, lol!!!  I did pop in to check email a couple of times during normal hours, but only for a few minutes. Tried to check on a few postings but time was very short, there was something always on stove, or grandkids needing something, most of the time a referee, lol!  I am going to have to go back to see what I missed that all of you are doing.  Bet I missed some real good things.

Well this is my 100th post, and I'm not off to a good start, but hopefully it will get better by the time I get to the bottom.  To start it off I'm having a Monday on a Tuesday, which will be Wednesday for some of you that are sleeping pretty shortly...............arrrrghhhhhh B-(

I just couldn't seem to get enough time this weekend to get it written, same for yesterday. Sorry!

So first, THANK YOU!!!!  Thank you for becoming my new internet friends, I have met lot of new friends far and wide. Laughed, giggled, shared stories, shared the heartache with some you who've lost those near and dear to you.  Worried when not every thing in your world was not right.  I have seen so many wonderful things. Blogland has offered me the opportunity to learn, share what I know and observe the most wonder array of design and art from all over the world,  I am in awe of the things that you do.

Lastly, Thank you to all who voted for my snowman quilt this past weekend.   I really appreciated it.  Congratulations to Terri who won with her Polka Dot Girls, a very nice quilt with such cute stitcheries. 

My posts get wordy enough, I'll try to keep it short!!(famous last words, lol)

for sending me some beautiful blues, greens and browns from her stash cleanout.  Several in that pile of goodies will help me complete this quilt.  Those pieces of fabric, plus some others I was using, a couple of bags and an unused computer keyboard also allowed the little girls to play "fabric store" spreading out bits of scraps on every available flat surface in the down stairs living room for an hour or two without any fighting, Thank you Cyndi for some peace and quiet (now they are refolded and back in one pile)!!!!!  Glad I didn't have to buy fabric at their store, she wanted 5.00 for one jelly roll size strips, $50.00 for a FQ, lol!!

and we did more, more, more of this...... picking, washing, slipping skins and canning tomatoes................ we have been up to our elbows in tomatoes since July.....

This shelf is a new addition to my daughter's storage closet.  Her garden exloded this year with tomatoes and peppers.  And this year she tried her hand at canning.  The top shelf is all pickled peppers, gypsies, salsa (what tag said-not sure what variety are, but they are mild, like green banana peppers, and no we did not pick them early.  They turn orangey, not yellow, if you leave them a long time), jalapenos, habaneros and jars of mixed peppers except for 6-7 quarts of pickles which have just started to produce now that summer is towards an end.  The 2 midddle shelves are all salsa, the rest is juice.  There are more tomatoes in the freezer.  Occasionally we didn't have time to can all that was ready, so we slipped the skins on the tomatoes, pureed and froze them to make salsa later. (they are salsa fanatics, but you can use it in taco soup or chili (it's spicy like rotel, without the chunks).  Last year they made 3 batches all summer.  But they liked it so well, her husband bought more plants this year!!!  Unfortunately he has been working in Oklahoma most of the summer and has missed out on the canning, but 2 weeks ago he was home and did all the salsa in the box (22 pints? I think) and 6 quarts of tomato juice by himself while we were at work.  He just left the mess to clean up...............  :-) ???  

Then there's this...................the ornaments I have been working on so far of mine and Dawn's.

oops, a couple are missing....don't worry, will find them, probably just out of picture range.

I am making 2 sets of my HOW ornaments. AND.........Because they are so much fun, I am making several sets of Dawn's Frosty Flakes blocks, half into ornaments, some sets with hexies, some sets without hexies  just the stitching.  Both in red and blue and maybe a few other colors????.   By the time I'm done there will be quite a few.

 So this is my 100th post giveaway gift. 

Drawing closes at midnight on the Saturday after Dawn posts her last Frosty flakes post with the completion directions and I will draw a name sometime that Sunday. Dawn's last post which should be about 6 weeks I think(9 weeks-2 already posted, and a new one will post tonight-oops she posted it already!!!!) I will draw the name of someone to receive a set of her blocks and all of the ornaments,both hers and my HOW ornaments.  You can watch the progress on my blog.  So this will be a long deadline, but ornaments are fun and the frosty flake blocks are just so cute, who wouldn't want to wait.

Frosty Flake #2

got it done, it's sooooo cute!!  If you haven't joined in yet, you need hop over to dawn hay's blog(see the frosty flake button on my side bar) and download these fun patterns. 

Here's my version of her frosty flakes block 2.

I even found some beads this week .  Last week I used small buttons and french knots.  I think it's a little "overflashed" the color appears to be kind of orangey but I assure it's red.  If you missed last week here are both of them.

She does such cute stuff I can't wait for the rest!!!!

And for those who've been here before, if you're wondering why I changed my header.  It's because I was told by someone that people want to know who they are blogging with.  I hate having my picture taken and do my best to avoid it.  But my quiltin' chick buddy, Anna Marie, will not let us hide behind our show and tell projects at our chicks meetings.  I really try to do that, but she'll wait forever until you come out.  So, there I am with my 2nd kaleidescope quilt called "I had a wild hair".  My kids were horrified that I would put those colors together, but as a half-baked artist, I thought,why not ?

The Mystey Monday HOW!! (HEXAGON ORNAMENT OF THE WEEK)

Week after week, blog after blog, I keep running across hexies, all sizes, all sorts, layered ones, embroidered, stamped, spangled, buttoned and glitzed.......... Now I made some one inch ones out of scraps from Bethies puprle quilt years ago intending to make a special little quilt.  Because after making several decided a big quilt was out of the question...........so there's about 25 tiny hexie flowers somewhere in my stuff, I gave a few to my aunt who was fascinated that I would do them that small.......

Then comes along Dawn Hay from As Sweet As Cinnamon , one of the Among the Gum Trees designers from down under who posted her new FROSTY FLAKES BOW last week (see my version on one of my  previous posts and her button for frosty flakes on my side bar for link) Anyway, I was hooked again with those little one inch hexies............!!! 
So I was sitting here this morning(writing part of this on Sunday) thinking about my monday mystery project when it hit me....................hexie ornaments..................so the monday mystery project will be hexie ornaments!  Each week, for awhile, or as long as I can think of new designs, there will be a hexie ornament on the monday mystery project.  They will only be available for a short while so if you want them, download them now.  No telling when they will disappear.

So if you want to stitch up some hexie ornaments you will need to gather some fabrics, buttons, stiff interfacing, felt and floss.  Then click on the words under the picture above for a link to google docs for a free pdf to download for directions to the hexie ornaments for this week.

The Red is a pat sloan fabric.  The stitchery on the back of the brown one is just eyeballed with the hex points, I did not transfer it.

And look at the mess I make when I start creating, I just gather up some things. plop down on the floor and began playing, do you make this much mess?

Seems like lots of mess for two little ornaments!

Twinsday

Some place called Twinsburg is having a twins celebration this weekend. Are you a twin,  do you have twins or do you have twins in your family? Got any funny "twincedents" to share?

I have a set of fraternal girls who are older than they'd like to be but still under 30. I was always amazed at the things people would say to us. When they were small, less than a year they only had peach fuzz for hair and people said, "Oh they look just alike, ".......now I let that slide since they were little and hairless, but obviously they never really LOOKED at them.......Elizabeth's face was as round as round could be and Sarah's face was long and slender.  Then their hair finally grew and here we go again, " Oh they look so alike how do you tell them apart?..............are you kidding me???.....one is a brunette and one is blonde!  

And then there were the people who knew we had twins but didn't know which kids they were........we have  4 kids all relatively the same age, Amanda was 3 years and 2 months when the girls were born and David was 11 1/2 months old when they were born ( no jokes, please, I've heard them all, half of them from my OB) accidents happen). ( For 2 weeks every year I have 3 the same age) Anyway as the kids grew people would look at the kids and just begin pairing them up in odd sets.......when Amanda was 6 she was short (still is) and dave was tall so they'd assume they were the  twins. Then later as Amanda "developed" it became obviously that she and Dave were not the same age.  So then the would choose David and Sarah, the tall blonde ones.  Dave hated that!!  When he was in 8th grade he told his English teacher who was brand new to the community that those girls in her 7th grade class were his cousins.............she was quite suprised when I wanted to talk to her about the girls at the parent/ teachers conference.   Now that they are older my blonde twin is no longer blonde.  Sarah's hair has turned brown over the years but with the hair dye it has been several shades of darker blondes, browns, auburns and reds???  So my twin stories don't center around them fooling us, just fooling others, in an odd sort of way.

DAISY-DO #2 done

Here's my version of Jennifer Reynolds BOM of Jenny of Elefantz.  A BOM called DAISY-DO

, you need to go to her blog to check out her wonderful BOM!!  It is so cute, and who doesn't love buttons!  I went a totally different direction in color. mine is a black and brown tone on tone pint with various creams to lt browns to stitch with.  It took me less than three hours start to finish.

I got Dawn Hay's new Frosty Flakes BOW done, but unfortunately I did not have any beads handy so

I subbed buttons for beads,  I didn't get Jenny's 2nd Daisy Do block done.... will finish it tomorrow!  Sorry Jenny but yours isn't  due for a month, anyway........and yes Dawn it's my turn to be up late.  The design was  quick, about 4 hours start to finish, a lot of that time included finding the buttons and fabric. lol!
